About The Position

The Internal Affairs Investigator (Investigator III, Grade N25) is responsible for overseeing internal investigations within the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. This role ensures compliance with laws and regulations, gathers information, conducts interviews, and collaborates with law enforcement to improve operations and prevent litigation. The investigator will utilize specialized questioning skills and handle sensitive investigations, making recommendations to enhance departmental practices.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience in an investigatory capacity directly related to the field of assignment.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
  • Experience using independent judgment and handling sensitive and confidential information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in interviewing and interrogation certification.
  • Prior police, corrections, or claims investigation experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and review facility operations across three correctional facilities on a 24-hour basis.
  • Evaluate the work of over 50 subordinate supervisory and non-supervisory Correctional Officers and support staff.
  • Conduct safety and security inspections within housing units and review reports to assess institutional mood and sources of tension.
  • Analyze trends related to incarcerated individuals, including adjustment problems and disciplinary actions.
  • Investigate departmental incidents and verify complaints, conducting thorough investigations into serious incidents.
  • Gather evidence, interview stakeholders, and analyze documentation for investigations.
  • Prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions, assisting in legal proceedings as necessary.
  • Brief department leadership and coordinate with staff on ongoing investigations.
  • Maintain comprehensive case files and ensure adherence to record-keeping policies.
  • Participate in decision-making, policy development, and strategy planning with internal and external stakeholders.
