About The Position

Join the NCDOT Division 6, District 2 team as an intern and gain valuable, hands-on experience in district-level transportation operations. This on-site internship offers exposure to civil engineering practices, permitting, plan review, and field inspection activities that support roadway safety and access management. Working alongside District Engineers, Assistant District Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and Administrative Assistants, the intern will assist the District Office with processing permit applications for driveways and encroachments, reviewing plans, and supporting field inspections. The internship is designed to provide broad exposure to the day-to-day functions of a District Office, including participation in office and field meetings to better understand real-world transportation decision-making. The District Office is located in Fayetteville, with possible daily travel to Harnett County for field inspection activities.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a Civil Engineering or related engineering program.
  • Interest in transportation engineering, permitting, surveying, or infrastructure inspection.
  • Willingness to participate in fieldwork, including travel to Harnett County.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in an on-site, collaborative environment.
  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) by May 2026.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
  • Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship

Responsibilities

  • Assist the District Office with processing driveway and encroachment permit applications.
  • Support plan and subdivision review activities under the guidance of district staff.
  • Participate in field inspections related to permits, roadway access, and other district activities.
  • Learn and apply NCDOT principles, procedures, and resources used in district operations.
  • Attend office and field meetings to gain exposure to typical district workflows and decision-making processes.
  • Work closely with multiple District Office staff members, supporting both technical and administrative tasks as needed.
