About The Position

The Veterinary Technician Internship at Metro Parks Tacoma offers senior students or recent graduates in veterinary technology an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in animal health care within a zoo environment. Interns will engage in various tasks related to animal husbandry, medical procedures, and diagnostic techniques, contributing to the overall care and management of zoo animals.

Requirements

• Be a senior student enrolled in a veterinary technology program with an accredited college or have just recently graduated.
• Fulfill college credit requirements if still enrolled in school.
• Be capable of the physical abilities required to work with animals (i.e. lift 50 pounds, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Introduction to basic husbandry and nutrition of zoo animals.
• Aid with sample collection and laboratory processing.
• Exposure to a variety of immobilization techniques (including dart systems).
• Assist with anesthesia/surgical procedures and exotic animal treatments.
• Participate in diagnostic radiographic techniques.
• Learn medical data entry on ZIMS360.
• Assist with hospital and medical equipment maintenance in a modern facility.
• Involvement with necropsy procedures (when applicable).
• Observe animal training techniques.
