Dominion Energy is seeking a System Protection Intern for Summer 2026 at our Lincoln Park 2 district office in Herndon, VA. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field of electric transmission and distribution. Interns will work closely with System Protection Technicians to develop a foundational understanding of substation electrical equipment, high-voltage diagnostic testing, protective relays, and control circuit troubleshooting. This role is ideal for students interested in fieldwork and technical operations, with the potential for full-time employment upon successful completion of the internship and alignment with Dominion Energy's culture and career pathways.

  • Review and interpret electrical design drawings.
  • Assist with infrared scans and basic instrument checkout and repair.
  • Participate in high-voltage diagnostic testing and relay testing.
  • Support functional testing of protection systems and control circuits.
  • Shadow System Protection Technicians to gain insight into substation equipment and field operations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with mechanical and/or electrical equipment and control circuits.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Solid math, technical, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Must meet physical requirements including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity, color vision, hearing, climbing, stooping, standing, and bending.
  • Weight restriction of 290 pounds due to equipment limits.
  • Enrollment at a 2-year or 4-year school pursuing a Bachelor's or Associate's Technology degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Electronics Technology, Instrumentation Technology, Mechatronic Technology, or other comparable disciplines.
