About The Position

An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking a Survey Intern to join our growing Construction and Surveying team in Vernon Hills, IL. How you will make an impact: The Survey Intern will report to the Division Director and will work both in the field and the office to operate various types of equipment, perform mathematical computations, and provide support to land survey and professional engineering staff. This role is a non-exempt, hourly position.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in land surveying, geospatial, GIS, or civil engineering related field preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and transportation to work related activities.
  • Self-starter with a strong attention to detail.
  • Average knowledge of mathematics is important to certain functions of this job.
  • Detail-oriented individual who takes pride in producing high-quality individual work products.
  • Ability to focus and work independently with general supervision and collaboratively as part of a larger team to achieve project goals.
  • Ability to demonstrate and communicate a thoughtful approach for completing assigned tasks.
  • A solid work ethic with the desire to be curious to learn about firm business and the industry.
  • Clearly and concisely communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Planner, Teams)
  • May require occasional bending and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • May require periodic travel up to 30%.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and support Professional Land Surveyors (PLS) and survey technicians in field duties and project work.
  • Perform field investigations, gather data, and record information to be used in the production of land survey drawings, engineering drawings and reports.
  • Operates survey instruments, conduct basic field adjustments, maintain neat and orderly field notes, utilizes hand-held data collectors/computerized software, and perform research required to complete surveys and staking as directed.
  • Working outdoors in different weather conditions/environments performing field work for the completion of topography surveys, boundary surveys, and/or construction layout.
  • Participate in the production of plans and the preparation, filing and retrieval of land survey maps, documents, and records.
