About The Position

The Systems Engineering Intern supports the development of medical devices by assisting with system level requirements, hardware integration, and testing activities. Working with Research and Development, the intern helps ensure device performance, safety, and compliance throughout the product lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
  • Experience with CAD design in Solidworks, AutoCAD, or similar software required
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes, engineering principles, and laboratory/test methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to collect and interpret data using Excel, statistical tools, or basic engineering software.
  • Skill in documenting procedures, test results, and engineering findings clearly and accurately.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools, fixtures, small components, or test equipment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, and operators.
  • Strong problem‑solving ability with an analytical mindset and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn new processes, equipment, and regulatory expectations within the medical device industry.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering student supports Research and Development Engineers in the creation/ development of endovascular harvesting and beating heart surgery devices.
  • Supports engineering activities involving system architecture, requirements, and integration across mechanical, electrical, and usability elements of the endovascular harvesting system.
  • Participate in system-level investigations of product performance issues, focusing on interactions between mechanical components, electronics, user interfaces (non‑software), and clinical workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure requirements align with user needs, risk controls, and regulatory standards.
  • Assist with fabricating product prototypes, including early-phase conceptual/feasibility prototypes, from informal or formal documentation.
  • Support risk management activities, including remediation, by helping update hazard analyses and system-level FMEAs in alignment with ISO 14971
  • Analyze test data and device performance to identify system-level trends, issues, or opportunities for improvement.
  • Utilize 3D printing technology to quickly iterate design solutions.
