Internships take place at our world headquarters in Bloomington, MN, over a 10–12 week period during summer 2026. The Modeling and Data Science department seeks an undergraduate summer intern to work on one or more projects at the intersection of data science and computational sciences. The candidate should have a background in STEM and a strong background in math, statistics, or computer science. The intern will work with one or more PhD-level theory/computational/data scientists, and depending on the project, may also interact with experimental scientists. The specific project(s) for the candidate will be determined by the combination of the candidate’s skill set/interests and the needs of the department. Examples may include scientific machine learning, machine vision analysis, cross-validation of trained neural network models, and computational chemistry.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, computer science, engineering, physical sciences, biological sciences or a related major.
  • Experience with data science principles including coding in Python and/or Julia.
  • Experience with technical communication, including presentations, written reports, and code documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background in mathematics including differential equations or statistics.
  • Experience doing research, either in academia or industry.
  • Interest in pursuing a graduate degree (e.g. MS, PhD).
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in one or more areas of scientific machine learning and/or computational sciences.
  • Collaborate with scientists and data scientists/data engineers.
  • Develop code and track changes using Git.
  • Communicate through informal discussions, presentations, written reports, code comments and pull requests.
