Job Summary This position offers hands-on experience in marine fieldwork and sample processing as part of Millstone's environmental monitoring programs. Responsibilities include multiple days per week working outdoors aboard research vessels in Long Island Sound. In addition to field activities, the intern will assist with laboratory tasks, including microscopic analysis and processing of ichthyoplankton samples to support the fish ecology program.

Requirements

  • Student working towards a degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences (or a similar discipline)
  • Basic understanding of Long Island Sound marine ecology
  • Ability to facilitate appropriate verbal, written, and interpersonal communication
  • Ability to understand and apply workflow process and embrace attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively interact and work in a team environment
  • Ability to perform all activities within strong company safety standards.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the work site for in person work 5 days a week
  • Must be a student who has completed their first year of an Associate's degree or a student pursuing a Bachelor's degree
  • Must be majoring in Biology, Environmental Sciences, or related
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and above
  • Must have a graduation date of 2028 or 2029

Nice To Haves

  • Basic experience working on or handling marine vessels (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Assisting staff biologists in field sample collection aboard research vessels and at shoreline locations.
  • Hauling in field sampling equipment and evaluate catches during trawl surveys.
  • Deploying and receiving lobster pots and evaluating the catch.
  • Working under microscope to process preserved ichthyoplankton samples.
  • Becoming familiar with laboratory procedures and company safety policies to ensure work is performed safely.
