About The Position

Our internship program is designed for students enrolled in an accredited university or college who are interested in developing on-the-job skills, experiences and insights that last a lifetime. Over the course of 10 weeks, you will have opportunities to learn about several areas of our business, network and collaborate with Ball leaders, and get involved in challenging project work. The Metal Research & Development Engineering Intern will gain design knowledge of consumer packaging, tooling and machine parts used in the manufacture of metal containers across a global organization.

Requirements

  • Current students pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline at an accredited 4-year college or university.
  • Completed at least one year of coursework with a graduation date of December 2026 or later.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Proficiency in basic mathematical calculations and engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (NX preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of basic hand tools and mechanical systems.
  • Willingness to learn new tools, processes, and technologies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborative work approach and ability to work as a team and across multiple areas.
  • Ability to work with confidential and proprietary information with integrity.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, ethical conduct, and commitment to continuous learning.

Responsibilities

  • Create and interpret mechanical engineering drawings using Ball's standards and apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Design and measure cans, bottles, tooling, and machine parts using advanced tools like laser micrometers.
  • Troubleshoot container and equipment issues through hands-on analysis in both lab and manufacturing environments.
  • Collaborate with the pilot line team to develop sample containers on the plant floor and test against performance specifications.
  • Support project implementation, including equipment installation, check-out, and start-up.
  • Generate technical reports and assist in updating specifications for containers and tooling.
  • Attend professional development activities, including a professional development week at our corporate headquarters in Colorado.
