Intern, Learning and Development

PlanetSan Francisco, CA
$25 - $60Hybrid

About The Position

Planet is growing fast — scaling our employee base, launching a manufacturing hub in Berlin, and promoting new managers at an accelerating pace. As the company grows, the need for consistent, high-quality manager capability becomes urgent. Great managers are the single largest lever for employee engagement, retention, and execution. Planet’s People Team is building a Manager Essentials program designed to give every people manager at the company a shared foundation in the skills that matter most: goal alignment, feedback, and coaching. As a Learning & Development Intern, you will be embedded in the team building this program from the ground up. You will partner directly with the L&D Program Manager to learn the Rise content authoring platform, build course modules in Skilljar (Planet’s learning management system), and help develop the curriculum that will be rolled out to managers across the company. This is hands-on instructional design work — you will not just be observing, you will be building learning experiences that real managers will complete. The Manager Essentials program is a strategic priority for the People Team this fiscal year. The curriculum is designed to reduce the volume of tactical manager support requests escalated to People Business Partners, equip managers to navigate compensation conversations confidently, and build a shared management language across a company that is scaling across multiple geographies and functions. This role offers deep exposure to how learning strategy, instructional design, and technology platforms come together to drive organizational capability at a scaling company. This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from our San Francisco office 3 days per week.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Learning Sciences, Organizational Development, Human Resources, Education, or a related field.
  • Genuine interest in how people learn — you are curious about adult learning theory, instructional design principles, and what makes training actually change behavior rather than just check a box.
  • Comfort with technology platforms and a willingness to learn new tools quickly — you will be working in Rise and Skilljar, and while prior experience is not required, you need to be someone who can pick up new software without extensive hand-holding.
  • Solid attention to detail and organizational skills — course design requires precision in sequencing, formatting, and content accuracy.
  • Good writing skills for developing clear, concise instructional content that is accessible to a diverse audience of managers with varying experience levels.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the L&D Program Manager on a shared project, taking direction while also contributing your own ideas and creative problem-solving.
  • Comfort with ambiguity — this program is being built for the first time, which means some aspects will evolve as you go. You need to be energized by that, not frustrated.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or project experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or e-learning module creation.
  • Previous experience with any LMS platform (Skilljar, Cornerstone, Docebo, etc.) or content authoring tools (Rise, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate).
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles such as Bloom’s Taxonomy, ADDIE, or backwards design — even from an academic context.
  • Experience creating multimedia learning content including video, interactive scenarios, or gamified assessments.
  • Interest in management development specifically — you have read, studied, or experienced what separates effective managers from ineffective ones and have a point of view on what new managers most need to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the L&D Program Manager to design and build core Manager Essentials course modules covering goal alignment, giving and receiving feedback, and coaching foundations.
  • Learn and operate the Rise content authoring platform to develop interactive, engaging learning content that translates management concepts into practical, applicable skills.
  • Build and configure courses in Skilljar (Planet’s LMS), including module sequencing, assessments, completion tracking, and the learner experience from enrollment through certification.
  • Research best practices in manager development and instructional design — identifying what makes manager training effective, what formats drive completion and retention, and how leading companies structure their foundational management programs.
  • Develop supporting materials such as facilitator guides, quick-reference resources, and job aids that reinforce the curriculum outside of the formal learning modules.
  • Help design the assessment and feedback mechanisms within the courses — including knowledge checks, self-reflection exercises, and scenario-based activities that test practical application.
  • Contribute to the L&D team’s broader learning roadmap by participating in team planning sessions and gaining exposure to other initiatives including AI fluency pathways, leadership coaching, and learning analytics.

  • Commuter Benefits
