About The Position

The Financial Intern is responsible for providing financial oversight for the mechanical Business Unit (BU). This position provides financial insights to build an improved business model, proactively driving value through informed and insightful decision-making, fostering a culture of cost consciousness, control, simplification, and continuous improvement. The Financial Intern - Mechanical interacts with individuals internal to CN. Within the organization, the incumbent liaises primarily with Financial Planning, Net Ops & Transportation Managers, Senior Managers and Directors.

Requirements

  • Financial Planning experience
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting, preparing business cases and productivity reports
  • Accounting experience in journal entries, account reconciliations, and preparing financial reports
  • Experience working in a CN business unit
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Advanced knowledge of Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), Essbase, business objects
  • Working towards a bachelor's degree in accounting, commerce, or Business

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) or working towards
  • Charted Professional Accountant (CPA) or working towards

Responsibilities

  • Assist in budgeting, forecasting and analyzing capital and operating expenses
  • Prepare year-end outlook (YEO) based on actual results and spending trends, and drive cost improvements with support from senior financial partners
  • Prepare and distribute monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports on expenditures and key performance metrics, including various analysis as required
  • Monitor, analyze and explain monthly operating results against budget and forecast
  • Preparation and distribution of financial reports to BU, taxation and Accounting Property
  • Preparation of financial outlooks and financial forecasts
  • Perform balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Participate in contract renewals
  • Assist in management of accrued liabilities in compliance with corporate accounting rules
  • Prepare business cases, benefits identification and quantification and ROI analysis
