The internship will focus on the work and activities associated with the Association’s state advocacy efforts to expand access to care in Mississippi. The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. The Association offers many resources to help you maintain work-life harmonization through your changing needs and life situations. Requirements

  • Advanced undergraduate or graduate course work in political science, public policy, public relations, history, sociology, communications, journalism, public health, health sciences and related fields.
  • Ability to travel 20-25% of the time (instate).
  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency with software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi connection and reliable transporation.
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.

  • Interest in advancing public policy, grassroots organizing, and media advocacy strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Compile research and data analysis
  • Prepare fact sheets, infographics, slide decks and other collateral materials used to support the policy campaign
  • Exhibit at community events
  • Assist with efforts to recruit, train and engage grassroots advocates
  • Assist with social media graphics and messaging
  • Schedule and participate in meetings with state and local lawmakers
  • Develop and deliver formal presentations
  • Participate in coalition meetings
