Intern- Engineering (Software AI/ML)
About The Position
We are seeking an intern to join our Edge AI software engineering team. The Edge AI software team is responsible for developing software-as-a-service (SAAS) applications for use by our customers to develop AI/ML applications. You will be working with software engineers to implement and build our AI/ML toolchain that our customers world-wide use for implementing software AI/ML solutions on Microchip hardware. You will gain experience in today’s software development techniques, cloud services, hands-on AI/ML workflow experience, AI/ML development toolchain experience, and AI/ML training knowledge while developing world-class software applications that will be used by millions of engineers across the globe. The ideal candidate will have base-level college or university coursework in software engineering and programming with mainstream programming languages, data structures and database usage and web development. Optional AI/ML coursework is useful. Full stack web development and cloud services experience through coursework, software project experience or intern experience is valued. Candidates that have embedded or IoT experience or used Microchip microcontrollers or microprocessor products in class or coursework is highly valued.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in Bachelors or Masters degree program in Software Engineering or related field
- First or second year coursework completed in programming languages such as Java, C, C++, C#, Python, JavaScript or JavaScript-based frameworks such as React.js, Angular.js, or Vue.js.
- Understanding of object-oriented programming principles and design patterns.
- Coursework or project experience with full-stack web development using languages and technologies such as Python, PHP, Angular.js, React.js, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, XML/YAML and OAuth API communication methods.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Eagerness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges.
Nice To Haves
- Software project experience using an Agile software development lifecycle workflow.
- Knowledge in using machine learning development tools and frameworks, such as the MPLAB Machine Learning Development Suite and Python AI/ML libraries using TensorFlow/TFLite, Pytorch, Keras, and ONNX.
- Use of Agentic AI in software development and MCP server development.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI) and edge-to-cloud integration.
- Knowledge of Jira, Confluence, Github/Gitlab/Bitbucket tools.
- Familiarity with SQL and database design concepts.
- Knowledge of data collection, preprocessing, and training neural networks in data centers.
- Solid understanding of edge computing architectures, including IoT devices, embedded systems, and real-time processing.
- Knowledge of IoT embedded computing and software/firmware development on hardware.
- Experience with edge computing platforms and optimizing AI/ML models for resource-constrained devices.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the design, development, and implementation of new and existing software applications using JavaScript, React.js, Python, HTML, MySQL.
- Develop, test and document software application code for our AI/ML applications that will be used by the company and our customers.
- Collaborate in an agile development environment with your team members on application requirements and propose innovative solutions.
- Work closely with technical leads and other engineers to understand requirements, milestones, and deliverables to build software and SAAS-based products.
- Utilize best practices in software development, including code reviews, unit testing, integration, CI/CD and DevOps workflows, Software Defined Lifecycle and software security requirements.
- Contribute in developing SAAS applications in a cloud-hosted environment.
- Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve software defects and issues.
- Assist with the documentation of software solutions, including technical specifications and user guides.
- Work with customers and provide support to end-users when necessary.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in software development, AI/ML and edge computing technologies to ensure our solutions remain at the cutting edge.
