About The Position

Our 10-week internship offers a comprehensive and immersive experience for students interested in gaining practical knowledge and skills in the banking industry. Each week, you will be exposed to different leaders and aspects of the line of business. You will have the opportunity to complete projects that will help you understand the day-to-day operations of a bank and develop a well-rounded skill set. Additionally, you will have the chance to receive guidance from experienced professionals in the field, participate in meetings, and network with other interns and associates. By the end of the program, you will have gained valuable insights, built a solid foundation in banking practices, and potentially set the stage for future career opportunities at First Horizon. We’re seeking a motivated, data-savvy Digital Data Engineer Intern to help advance our digital analytics capabilities. In this role, you’ll support our product and digital leadership associates by building and automating data pipelines, standardizing datasets from Excel, legacy systems, and third‑party sources, and preparing data for Power BI reporting. You’ll work under the guidance of experienced associates, gaining hands-on experience in data engineering, analytics, and reporting.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Analytics, or a related field.
  • Foundational proficiency in Python and SQL through coursework, projects, or prior internship experience.
  • Basic understanding of data wrangling (e.g., pandas, SQL joins) and data modeling concepts.
  • Familiarity with business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI or Tableau) from classes or projects.
  • Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with digital product owners and business partners (with mentor support) to understand data needs and help translate them into technical tasks.
  • Build and maintain basic ETL/ELT scripts in Python and SQL under supervision to ingest, clean, and standardize data from multiple sources.
  • Perform data quality checks, troubleshoot pipeline issues, and document findings with guidance from senior associates.
  • Prepare, model, and stage datasets for business intelligence use (primarily Power BI) and contribute to basic report/dashboard prototypes.
  • Create and maintain data dictionaries, pipeline documentation, and operational runbooks.
  • Support ad hoc and recurring reporting needs across product, design, engineering, and leadership.
  • Follow data governance and security best practices (e.g., naming conventions, handling of sensitive data) as directed.
  • Communicate progress and present findings to non-technical stakeholders with coaching from your mentor.
