About The Position

ENGIE North America is seeking a Controls Engineering Intern to support industrial control systems (ICS), automation platforms, and operational technology (OT) systems for the University of Iowa utility network. This on-site role at the Madison Street Services Building includes programming support, testing, troubleshooting, CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) updates in Maximo, networking tasks, and ICS security validation. You’ll work closely with the Controls Engineering Team (CET) and collaborate with ICS security and Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) personnel. This position reports directly to the CET Manager. Work hours are flexible: up to 20 hours/week during academic semesters and up to 40 hours/week during breaks (Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.). No weekend or after-hours work is expected. This internship offers hands-on experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, ICS/OT operations, reliability engineering, and ICS cybersecurity. It is ideal for students interested in PLC/HMI (Programmable Logic Controller / Human-Machine Interface) programming, automated system design, industrial networking, reliability planning, CMMS workflows, and modern ICS/OT systems.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at the University of Iowa or Kirkwood Community College in a relevant engineering or applied engineering technology program such as Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, or Industrial Maintenance Computer Science students may be considered with relevant project or coursework experience.
  • No prior professional experience is required.
  • Have an interest in control systems, PLCs/HMIs, automation, instrumentation, industrial networking, reliability/asset management, or ICS security.
  • Willingness to learn Maximo, IEC 61131 ‑ 3 programming, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and safety awareness.
  • Interns must be enrolled students in good standing at the commencement of the intern semester.
  • On ‑ site attendance required (20–40 hours/week, depending on academic schedule).
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record (may involve use of a company vehicle).
  • Ability to climb stairs/ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, and wear required PPE.
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies

Responsibilities

  • Support troubleshooting, testing, and documentation of ICS/OT systems.
  • Assist in updating control sequences, configurations, and networking components.
  • Contribute to ICS cybersecurity testing and control validation.
  • Maintain ICS asset records and reliability/maintenance documentation in Maximo.
  • Assist with technical documentation and project coordination.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
