About The Position

Responsible for learning all areas of container terminal administration and operations at Bayport and Barbours Cut, including vessel operations, yard planning, terminal operating systems, gate processes, safety policies, statistical data collection and analysis. This position will work closely with many departments within operations and become familiar with PHA’s relationship with many of its stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2026 graduates are not eligible unless they enroll in graduate program in Fall 2026
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, including strong verbal and listening skills.
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Punctuality is key.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours on a limited basis to better understand the 24-hour operational cycle

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with each terminal’s operations departments and assist with vessel operations management, including vessel crane rental agreements, management of terminal traffic, and communication with maintenance, stevedores and ILA labor.
  • Become familiar with terminal operating systems (TOS) and gate operating systems (GOS) including N4, XPS, and CAP.
  • Assist with yard operations and inventory activities.
  • Review and comprehend monthly statistical reports.
  • Attend PHA Commission meeting(s) to understand the procurement and formal process of decision making.
  • Interface with truck drivers to assist with gate transactions and yard instructions.
  • Attend internal and external meetings to understand business decisions.
