Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine R&D Data Science & Digital Health organization is seeking a PhD-level AI/ML research intern to work at the intersection of representation learning, bioimaging foundation models, predictive modeling, and drug discovery. This internship is designed for candidates who want to develop novel machine learning methods and apply them to large-scale high-content imaging data to generate biological insights that advance drug discovery. You will work with large-scale cell painting datasets to develop and derive biologically meaningful representations. You will be a member of a dynamic team comprising AI/ML scientists, computational biologists and subject matter experts to prototype, evaluate, and iterate on data science solutions. The internship could be based in Cambridge, MA; Spring House, PA; Titusville, NJ; or Zug, Switzerland.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing PhD degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Computational Biology, or related quantitative field.
  • Strong working knowledge of foundation models, vision transformers, and AI/ML methods for large-scale bioimaging data (e.g., Cell Painting)
  • Strong analytical skills in computer vision for bioimage analysis with validated track records (publication in top-tier journals/conferences, public code contributions, etc)
  • Proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with Deep Learning frameworks such as PyTorch to address scientific problems.
  • Strong technical communication and presentation skills.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.
  • Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in one or more of the following - Experience developing AI/ML methods to derive biological insights from high-dimensional bioimaging data
  • Familiarity with vision transformers, predictive modeling, graph modeling, and domain adaptation methods in the biomedical field
  • Hands-on experience analyzing cell painting datasets is a plus
  • Proven track records of publishing in related top-tier journals/conferences

Responsibilities

  • Develop and evaluate AI/ML algorithms to extract biologically meaningful phenotypic representations from large-scale high-content images
  • Collaborate closely with other machine learning scientists, computational biologists, and chemists to develop and execute the research project.
  • Document and disseminate research findings internally and externally (e.g.- submitting to top-tier ML conferences/journals).

Benefits

  • Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan.
