About The Position

The automation mechanical engineer intern supports the design, development and sustainment of advanced manufacturing solutions to increase production quality and velocity—solutions include the use of mechatronic assemblies, robotics, conveying systems, assembly poka-yoke fixtures, flexible assembly workstations and other typical automation technologies. The automation mechanical engineer intern partners with other functions to identify and deploy opportunities within the production operations.

Requirements

  • Student working towards a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering program for the entire duration of internship.
  • Experience in computer aided design (CAD) within SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Creo.

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment and able to lead without formal authority.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team environment; able to follow through on assignments with little to no supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop solutions for automation opportunities using Plexus standard processes, Plexus approved solution providers and/or the global Plexus automation team.
  • Develop Proof of Concept (POC) prototypes for new programs and tooling for additional products to be added to automated production processes.
  • Architect and develop required documentation, including models, drawings, and assembly instructions for developed technologies.
  • Support engineering development of manufacturing solutions utilizing automation technology.
  • Participate in design reviews of the product to assess what type of automated technology could be leveraged within manufacturing of the product.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams and build stable working knowledge of Plexus manufacturing processes for mechanical, software, and electrical design.
  • Build an overall awareness of sound engineering principles, considerations and applications relative to production needs.
