About the position

The Anatomical Pathology Lab Assistant internship at Labcorp offers a unique opportunity for students pursuing a degree in biological or laboratory sciences. This 12-week program allows interns to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced laboratory environment, supporting various non-technical tasks while learning about the operations of the anatomical pathology department. Interns will engage in project-based work, professional development workshops, and networking opportunities, all aimed at enhancing their education and career prospects in the medical field.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill lab assistant or specimen processor duties while supporting the work of technicians, technologists, and scientists.
  • Learn standard operating procedures for analyzing and storing specimens.
  • Learn processing, grossing, and embedding of biopsy specimens.
  • Complete meaningful independent projects in assigned area of the laboratory.
  • Work under direct supervision and perform general duties as assigned by the designated department.
  • Support the lab by performing data entry, loading instruments, performing maintenance on all types of equipment, and gathering supplies for testing.
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties for a designated department including clerical and customer service functions.
  • Contribute to a cohesive team environment and plan individual workload in coordination with team members.

Requirements

  • Working towards an associate or bachelor's degree in a biological or laboratory science with a minimum of 60 semester hours including 6 hours in biology, 6 hours in chemistry, and 12 hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology.
  • Interest in completing a national certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while prioritizing and managing multiple tasks.
  • Comfortability with handling biological specimens such as tissue, cells, blood, urine, stool, serum, or plasma.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working towards a bachelor's degree in histology or cytotechnology (preferred), or biochemistry, microbiology, biology, or chemistry, and not graduating before November 2025.
  • Interest in completing a certification as a Histotechnologist (HLT) or a Histotechnician (HT).
  • Interest in completing an accredited Cytology program.
  • Experience delivering multiple projects in an academic or professional setting.
