About The Position

AMA is currently accepting applications for multiple summer intern positions associated with the Aerothermodynamics branch in the Entry Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. The successful candidate will work on a short term (10 week) project in a research topic of relevance to the aerothermodynamics branch. Projects include focused research on topics in Entry Vehicle Aerothermodynamics and the associated shock layer chemistry and radiation. The applicant will be expected to support projects in one or more areas of research such as shock-layer radiation, high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics of hypersonic flows, computational chemistry for plasma reaction kinetics, free-flight CFD and development of Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence models to solve aerothermodynamics problems. The exact projects will be assigned based upon the skillset of the successful applicants and project needs. The pay rate for this position will be $29.50-$33.50 per hour and is commensurate with experience and education. Requirements

Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited university are highly preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
Progress toward a degree (Undergraduate or graduate) in technical areas of relevance to entry systems
US citizenship or permanent US residency is preferred and may be a requirement for some of the positions.
Only candidates currently authorized to work in the US will be accepted (no visa sponsorship)

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and reacting flows
Experience running computational fluid dynamics simulations
Experience with grid generation tools (e.g. Pointwise)
Computer programming experience (e.g. C, Fortran, Python)
Ability to analyze technical data using analytical tools (e.g. Matlab, TecPlot)
Experience developing ML/AI models

Responsibilities

Perform research on assigned topic for period of 10 weeks
Regular reporting (verbal and/or written) to research mentor on progress of project
Present final results to division at completion of project
