The Intermediate Materials Testing Scientist at 3D Systems is responsible for conducting in-depth analysis and characterization of additive manufacturing materials to support research and development (R&D) and material launches. This role involves collaboration with a global materials characterization team to troubleshoot printing challenges and optimize material properties across various sectors including healthcare, automotive, and aerospace.

  • Conduct material characterization using techniques such as thermomechanical analysis, chemical compatibility analysis, and mechanical testing.
  • Prepare and test samples according to established procedures, ensuring compliance with laboratory safety standards and ASTM or ISO methods.
  • Analyze and interpret data to assess material properties, quality, and performance characteristics.
  • Accurately document experimental results and maintain comprehensive records of procedures, findings, and analyses.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists from various disciplines to support product development and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Stay informed on advancements in materials characterization technologies and methodologies.
  • Participate in the development and optimization of processing and characterization techniques.
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field required.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with analytical instruments, including thermal and thermomechanical analysis techniques.
  • Strong understanding of material properties and characterization techniques.
  • Proficient in data analysis and interpretation, with experience using software tools for statistical analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience in a materials characterization role within an industrial or research setting.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods and software.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques and familiarity with laboratory safety protocols.
  • Basic programming skills for automating data acquisition and analysis processes.
  • Interest and experience in additive manufacturing or CAD software (e.g., SOLIDWORKS).
  • Knowledge of analytical methods like FT-IR, rheology, and mass spectrometry.
