About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Analytics and Reporting, the incumbent compiles, analyzes, evaluates, and disseminates research information, derived from both internal and external sources, to provide timely and accurate information on the uOttawa’s research activities in support of: Strategic and operational planning at central administration, faculty and affiliated institute levels; Evaluation of progress towards strategic objectives; Ongoing management of the uOttawa’s research enterprise; and External reporting and communication requirements. This is a critical role for the uOttawa to advance its strategic objective for research excellence. In this role, your responsibilities will include: Analysis, Performance Indicators and Evaluation: Provides timely and accurate evidence-based information and recommendations to senior management on the uOttawa research activities including: Planning, managing and undertaking complex, multi-dimensional analyses and studies to develop evidence-based advice and strategic direction for central administration, faculties and affiliated institutes. Defining, maintaining and updating research performance measures used in the university’s balanced scorecard and benchmarking, and provides comparable information to faculties and departments to support their planning. Maintaining program records, conducting program specific analysis and providing reports required to ensure that the uOttawa receives the full benefit of these programs. Defining data standards and developing processes and analytical tools and performance indicators to ensure integrity of data for research and ethics. Providing relevant and high-quality information to support program and project evaluations. Needs Assessment: Assesses the uOttawa’s requirements and gaps in the management of research information keeping abreast of reporting needs, issues, and new developments. This includes: Developing comparative measures against other universities to support benchmarking, strategic planning and monitoring. Monitoring internal and external trends in research activity, anticipating future information needs, and locating and developing sources of data to meet these needs. Determining and defining research information needs of faculties and other uOttawa departments. Project Management & Reporting: Executes special projects and reports related to the business processes and the research information management needs of Office of the Vice President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and of the uOttawa as a whole. This includes: Leading all aspects of special projects and assigned initiatives, including defining objectives, conducting analyses; and report writing. Preparing ad-hoc reports, often requested on short notice and with unexpected and unique requirements, and supporting these reports with strategic analysis identifying recommendations based on the results. Internal and External Liaison: Oversees the sound management of the uOttawa’s research data holdings, a key institutional resource determining the needs of internal and external stakeholders. Acts as the primary point of contact between internal departments, such as the Information and Technology team, Financial Planning Service and Institutional Planning and Research, faculties, and researchers to provide expert advice and guidance on research data analysis. This includes: Collaborating with affiliated institutes to ensure compatibility of research information, to define standard approaches to research reporting as well as for the validation of eligibility and allocation of the Federal Research Support Fund Program. Working closely with the other units, anticipating their information needs to ensure that research information is clearly and consistently represented. Building awareness in faculties and departments of research information and how it can be used in strategic analysis and planning activities. Providing workshops and training on the use of the corporate awards management information system and ancillary systems and on research funding information in general, to guide the faculties in improving their own reporting and planning capabilities. Other: The incumbent anticipates and responds to changing needs for management information reporting and strategic analysis. Participates in business process analyses, development of data quality assurance standards and processes.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of quantitative and statistical techniques normally acquired through an undergraduate degree in a relevant field. Master's degree in a related field is an asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in using analytical software to manipulate datasets, including one or more of the following: EXCEL; ACCESS; SQL, SAS/SPSS
  • Ability to synthesize information from numerous sources, identify the key elements and present it in a clear, consistent, and verifiable manner
  • Ability to interpret data and select what is important in order to provide high level recommendations in complex situations, under pressure and in a timely manner
  • Strong technical and analytical skills to reliably extract, validate, integrate, and work with complex data sets and strong writing capacity
  • Excellent understanding of data management, extraction and analysis and presentation concepts and tools including an understanding of the nature, quality and limitations of the data
  • Demonstrated decision-making, problem-solving, organizational, negotiation, needs assessment and administrative skills
  • Excellent understanding of university research funding and programs and of the university structure in general
  • Bilingualism – English and French (spoken and written)
  • Initiative and ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
