About The Position

The WSP Tampa office serves clients from around the state of Florida on a wide variety of projects ranging from local municipal (stormwater improvements, roadway resurfacing and/or reconstruction, pedestrian safety, utility improvements) to major interstate reconstruction contracts. The selected candidate would work alongside technical staff, engineers, and project managers for reconstruction and permitting of a variety of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with research, concept development and design/permitting of stormwater management systems (water quality and water quantity), roadways, bridges, water supply systems and sanitary sewer collection systems. The selected candidate would also assist with developing accurate and concise reports and documentation for the related projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Professional Engineering License in FL or ability to obtain in twelve months.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, ICPR, SWMM, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Experience with Civil3D, OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and ICPR.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

  • With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the permitted construction plans, surveys, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform basic professional civil engineering work relating to conducting research and field inspections of existing and proposed site conditions, resources and infrastructure to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical stormwater assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work and permitting.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers (i.e., structures, drainage, traffic) and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State and locally funded improvement and development projects.
  • Support project tasks for conceptual and preliminary engineering and final design activities, as well as development of construction plans, calculations and specifications.
  • Participate hands-on in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E).
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
