The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW–Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services. Under the general supervision of the University Architect, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Campus Planning and Design, within the Division of Facilities Planning & Management, the Interior Design position supports project teams through design and delivery of capital projects which include instructional, academic and administrative spaces. Capital Project scope includes renovations of existing facilities and construction of new buildings, with total project budgets ranging from $300K to multi-million dollars. Every project prioritizes design quality, cost-effective construction, and operational efficiency. The Interior Design position will provide guidance to the project team as a campus interior design subject matter expert throughout design and implementation. Key to this position is supporting internal and external project stakeholders to ensure critical campus project requirements are met. The Interior Designer’s involvement includes active participation in programming discussions, tracking design development action items, and subsequently managing furnishings procurement and installation. Monitoring furnishings scope and budget on behalf of project team is a primary responsibility of this position. The project team collaborates continually to assure effective interpretation and application of University policies, procedures, and design guidelines by contracted architectural and engineering firms. Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in interior design, preferably in commercial, institutional, or educational settings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with architects, engineers, and stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Meets all requirements as a Registered Interior Designer as outlined by the State of Wisconsin Department of Safety & Professional Services ( DSPS Registered Interior Designer ).
  • Experience specifying architectural finishes and evaluating installation quality.
  • Experience managing furnishings installations from procurement through completion.
  • Proficiency in design and collaboration tools, including: AutoCAD / Revit, BlueBeam, Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe Creative Suite

Responsibilities

  • Designs, and renovates interior spaces according to aesthetic preferences, structural requirements, and established policies and procedures
  • Assesses, interprets, finalizes, and provides consultations to clients regarding design plans, expectations, and the execution process
  • Communicates and coordinates with internal and external stakeholders and construction professionals to complete assigned projects and adhere to established timelines
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for the procurement of necessary project materials
  • Demonstrates skill in accurately reading and interpreting Construction Document (CD) sets and specifications, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, budget, and requirements .
  • Provides guidance on purchasing rules, regulations, and contract management pertaining to Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E) procurement, ensuring strict adherence to applicable policies and procedures.
  • Provides direction to Architects/Engineers (A/E's) concerning University design technical guidelines, ensuring compliance with established standards, specifications, and industry best practices.
  • Utilizes software to evaluate and document directives in design plans and project documents. This may include AutoCAD, REVIT, BlueBeam, Adobe Creative Suite, Office 365.
