About The Position

Summer 2026 (May 2026 - August 2026) Full-time Work Schedule, Monday- Friday, 40 hours per week Position: Integrated Mobility Division Intern (2 positions available) Location: Highway Building, 1 S Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC Internship Duration: 10-week internship (May 26, 2026- July 31, 2026) This posting will fill positions 65022885 and 65022886. Internship Opportunity: Integrated Mobility Division Intern The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division (IMD) is seeking a motivated intern to support the Planning and Programming team and related leadership within the Division. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting data-driven decision-making, statewide transportation planning, grant and finance administration, and local mobility projects that shape multimodal and public transportation across North Carolina. Position Overview: The intern will collaborate with the Planning and Programming team, the Deputy Director, the Senior Transportation Advisor, and additional branches and divisions across NCDOT. Projects will focus on performance metrics and data gathering, grants and finance administration, statewide planning initiatives, and project coordination. The intern will support efforts such as organizing and analyzing transit system data, intercity bus data, transportation demand data, bike route mapping, and tracking local transportation project status. This role emphasizes meaningful, hands-on projects that support statewide mobility goals, compliance, and continuous process improvement.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) by May 2026.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
  • Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Background or coursework in urban planning, transportation planning, engineering, urban design/studies, political science, public administration, or a related field
  • Strong skills in data analysis, report writing, and information organization
  • Experience or familiarity with ArcGIS or other mapping tools
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with Power BI is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent organizational and time-management abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Professional demeanor and ability to represent the Division at meetings and public events

Responsibilities

  • Assist with performance metrics and data collection, organizing and maintaining data related to IMD’s programs and initiatives
  • Support grants and finance administration by assisting the Deputy Director with process improvement strategies and organizing transit system data
  • Assist the statewide planning manager with intercity bus data, transportation demand data, and bicycle route mapping
  • Support the Senior Transportation Advisor by organizing project information and following up on the status of local area transportation projects
  • Develop, update, and maintain Smartsheets and other tracking tools for project coordination and reporting
  • Assist with data analysis, report writing, and presentation materials
  • Map projects using GIS or other mapping applications as needed
  • Attend and support project meetings, public meetings, and ribbon-cutting events
  • Collaborate with team members across IMD to support planning, programming, and stakeholder engagement activities
