About The Position

This employee is a para-professional working within the Intake Unit of Adult Probation and Parole Services. Work includes a significant degree of contact with probationers, parolees, Court related agencies, treatment providers, and the public. Major responsibilities include conducting an intake interview and/or initial investigation, review and assessment of individuals as they are processed through the court system, assignment of clients to specific caseloads, and making referrals for treatment or special conditions based on the Court Order.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to high school graduate.
  • Employee must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment in compliance with the policies and procedures of the Court of Common Pleas and Adult Probation and Parole Services.
  • Knowledge of principles and policies of the criminal justice system, including statutes, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of community, social, and economic resources available to assist in rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of individual and group behavior, with emphasis on the behaviors of persons involved in criminal activity.
  • Ability to identify and locate sources of information about clients’ background.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, victims, members of the Judiciary, co-workers, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to recognize overt signs of substance abuse, violent tendencies, or other anti-social behaviors, and recommend treatment plans accordingly.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete records for the use by others.
  • Ability to manage and organize assignments and prioritize work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • The candidate must pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to sit, sometimes for long periods of time.
  • Ability to escort offenders from waiting area to office.
  • Ability to operate a computer or laptop.
  • Ability to lift and move files weighing up to 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or business school certification is preferred, or any combination of the minimum acceptable education and experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited below.

Responsibilities

  • Interview newly sentenced or paroled individuals to explain probation and/or parole requirements and processes, ascertaining personal data about the client and securing clients’ agreement to rules and regulations.
  • Assign clients to specific probation officers based on geographic assignment and/or rotation for city caseload, setting up appointment for client with probation officer and forwarding information to probation officer.
  • Determine if special conditions are ordered by the Court and facilitates initial referral to appropriate agency.
  • Enter sentence computations, special condition information, and probation maximum expiration dates into APPS' computer program
  • Maintain responsibility for cases where clients are under supervision, but have not reported for intake. Send failure to report letters when warranted.
  • Complete transfer packets on clients not living within the county.
  • Performs related work as required.
