About The Position

The Intake/Diversion Officer is responsible for assessing youth and managing crises within the juvenile justice system. This role involves making recommendations, ensuring compliance with court orders, and providing case management and support to juveniles and their families. The officer seeks alternatives to detention while prioritizing community safety and utilizes evidence-based techniques in their work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience working with at-risk youth.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license.
  • Flexible work schedule availability outside normal business hours.

Responsibilities

  • Assess youth and manage crises within the juvenile justice system.
  • Make recommendations and ensure compliance with court-ordered terms.
  • Provide case management, supervision, and support to juveniles and families.
  • Search for alternatives to detention while ensuring community safety.
  • Attend court hearings and provide consultation and recommendations.
  • Conduct assessments and collect collateral information for risk assessments.
  • Explain the court process to clients entering the system.
  • Maintain positive relationships with juveniles and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain client files for various case types.
  • Meet with families informally to discuss alternatives to official complaints.
  • Provide incentives, expectations, and consequences for youth supervision.
  • Administer drug and alcohol screenings/tests and prepare samples for lab analysis.
  • Work with parents to establish positive parenting skills and promote positive behavior change in youth.
  • Provide crisis intervention and direct families to suitable solutions or referrals.
  • Handle detention hearings for youth entering Juvenile Court.
  • Participate in and monitor groups and programs as needed.
  • Monitor youth in holding cells and provide transportation as necessary.
  • Use evidence and strength-based practices to promote positive behavior change.
  • Build and maintain relationships with juveniles, families, community partners, and law enforcement.
  • Respond to calls from law enforcement personnel/agencies, including outside normal business hours and on weekends.
  • Document and maintain accurate records using case management systems.
