About The Position

The position involves receiving inquiry calls and assisting callers with scheduling face-to-face assessments or providing triage to appropriate community referrals based on patient needs. The role requires assessing or ensuring necessary assessments by licensed mental health professionals for patients presenting for assessment. Coordination with physicians to ensure appropriate treatment is provided, either at the hospital or through other community providers, is essential. The position also involves ensuring appropriate screening of medical and behavioral emergency conditions and completing all administrative processes related to patient admissions, including initial authorization of care with insurance companies or third-party payors.

Requirements

  • Current unencumbered license in the state of employment as a LPC, LMFT, LISW, LSW, LCSW, LISW-S, LPCC, LPCC-S, or CSW.
  • CPR and hospital-selected de-escalation technique certification.
  • One to three years of experience in a behavioral health setting.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates excellent phone skills including inquiry calls, explanation of assessment processes, scheduling appointments, and successful closure of a call.
  • States the procedure for managing a crisis call and identifies when to activate EMS services.
  • Documents all inquiry calls completely and legibly.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to community resources if not scheduling an assessment.
  • States the process and reasoning for all follow-up calls.
  • Enters all inquiry calls into HCS with all necessary data.
  • Shows competency in reviewing medical screens and notifying the RN for additional review.
  • States the working definition and procedure for managing medically and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Identifies and triages emergent patients and prioritizes care.
  • Completes the clinical screening and assessment tool (PASP) with clear documentation.
  • Identifies the need for additional screenings for substance use, nutrition needs, and abuse for children/adolescents.
  • Demonstrates understanding of admission criteria for various levels of care.
  • Documents any special needs related to spiritual or cultural needs.
  • Ensures each patient is seen by a physician or has had a consult for treatment recommendations.
  • Notifies unit staff of patient acuity, chief complaint, and history upon admission.
  • Demonstrates understanding of hospital required paperwork for admission.
  • Ensures compliance with state laws governing involuntary hospitalization.
  • Maintains accurate EMTALA log and bed board reconciliation.
  • Demonstrates understanding of utilization review processes.
  • Contracts with managed care organizations as applicable.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and organization in stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
  • Interacts professionally with patients and families.
  • Ensures documentation meets current standards.
  • Answers the telephone politely and communicates information appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as required.
