GEICO is seeking Claims Legal Coverage Counsel to join its Enterprise Litigation and Investigations Division. Ideally, the Claims Legal Coverage Counsel will have experience advising claims organizations in insurance coverage and claims-related litigation arising from personal auto, personal umbrella insurance policies. The Claims Legal Coverage Counsel will identify, develop, and maintain the Company’s position on claims related coverage matters, litigation, bad faith claims, and extra-contractual matters. The Claims Legal Coverage Counsel will be expected to provide legal services and advice regarding personal auto insurance claims, personal umbrella policies of heightened complexity, complex extracontractual matters, bad faith, and other major litigation and manage large-scale projects. The position may involve other duties, as assigned. This role will partner closely with other business teams, while forming part of a collaborative legal department that is valued for its practical advice.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 5-7 years of insurance coverage experience and litigation management experience at a law firm, government, and/or in-house role.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Up-to-date understanding of the key legal issues germane to an insurance organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.
  • Trial, motion practice and/or appellate experience.
  • Experience working as a Coverage Attorney, Claims Counsel or Claims Attorney at a law firm or an insurance company.
  • Experience handling coverage, bad faith or extra-contractual litigation against an insurance company.

  • A background in insurance coverage and litigation.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, both legal and non-legal.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to the claims organization on insurance coverage issues, bad faith and extra-contractual allegations against the Companies.
  • Perform factual and legal research and analysis.
  • Review documents at the request of Legal Department management.
  • Develop and conduct in-house presentations on research projects.
