Organization and Position Overview Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact. The Instrumentation Lead is a key leader responsible for overseeing day-to-day calibration and troubleshooting activities to ensure the company’s assets are managed in compliance with cGMP and other applicable standards. This role ensures equipment availability, reliability, and optimal performance by calibrating and maintaining process, facility, and utility equipment according to established guidelines. The Instrumentation Lead trains and develops a team of instrument technicians by fostering a culture of safety, technical expertise, and innovation. In addition, this role ensures alignment of daily calibration initiatives with organizational goals for safety, quality, and efficiency, directly supporting the delivery of novel medicines for clinical trials within The Medicine Foundry. This position will be responsible for developing initial processes and requirements, such as job plans and data sheets for initial calibrations. Once the site is operational, this role will also be responsible for the long-term instrument reliability for The Medicine Foundry.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • 5+ years of industrial process instrumentation and calibration experience in FDA regulated industry required.
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a process instrumentation team.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems and calibration, including the following:
  • Instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level, pH)
  • Electrical test equipment (flukes, signal generators, oscilloscopes, etc.)
  • Electrical troubleshooting (24 VDC to 120 VAC)

Responsibilities

  • Sets expectations for a positive & proactive safety culture, ensures that all team members are knowledgeable and compliant regarding safety procedures, policies, permits and practices. Ensures proper housekeeping procedures are maintained. Reports all safety concerns, incidents, and injuries to supervisor.
  • Responsible for team’s compliance and meeting the quality standards as defined by cGMPs, the Global Quality Standards, and local procedures.
  • Responsible for managing daily activities of the instrumentation team including resource planning, resolving operational issues, and developing team’s skillset. Must be able to lead team on off shifts such as nights and weekends with minimal staffing onsite.
  • Ensuring quality of calibration and maintenance plan execution. Main point of contact for calibration/instrumentation technicians and responsible for escalation of any issues. Responsible for hands-on team training and development and ensuring team is current on training prior to assigning work. Responsible for calibration KPI’s associated with team’s performance.
  • Effectively troubleshoot and diagnose process instrumentation equipment and make appropriate repairs to minimize downtime. Aligns team priorities to support production schedule and equipment availability. Interfaces with customers to ensure alignment and effective prioritization of maintenance activities. Assists incident reporting, investigating, and corrective measures for instrument related issues.
  • Responsible for developing job plans and datasheets for initial calibrations throughout the site. Provide process instrumentation support and leadership for the IQ/OQ parts of the site start-up.
