About The Position

The Instrument & Controls Technician will support and troubleshoot field instrumentation of all types, calibrate equipment, robotics, update PI&D’s, and understand PLC’s control strategies. They will actively assist operations, maintenance, electrical and process automation teams. The IC Tech will support the safe, efficient and cost-effective production of copper, moly and sulfuric acid, by performing various fixed plant and downstream facilities instrumentation tasks. This will include knowledge of chemistry, physics, low voltage device and theory and ability to learn new operational processes. The successful Instrumentation and Controls (IC) Technician will demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude along with essential soft skills, including effective communication, solid writing and math abilities, and a keen attention to detail.

Requirements

  • AA/AS degree in related field and 1 year experience in Instrumentation and Controls or relevant military experience with automated heavy industrial facilities systems, instrumentation, and pneumatic controls OR
  • 3 years Instrumentation and Controls experience and successful Completion of a formal I&C apprenticeship or higher-level coursework from an accredited vocational/trade school (non-correspondence) OR
  • HS and 5 years specific Instrumentation & Controls experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced proficiency in calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex field instrumentation, including transmitters, control valves, and analyzers.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs and control strategies, with ability to perform basic programming and diagnostic tasks on platforms such as ABB, Allen-Bradley, or Siemens.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus) and integration of instrumentation into control systems.
  • Experience interpreting and updating P&IDs, performing loop checks, and ensuring accurate process measurement and control.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving ability in heavy industrial environments, particularly in concentrators, smelting, and hydrometallurgical processes.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, calibrate, repair and install power plant system instrumentation and control devices.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and provides feedback on follow up work and maintenance program improvement.
  • Performs loop checks to ensure instruments and software work together to ensure the process measurement and/or control of a process variable is functional.
  • Utilizes computer systems to access work orders, input historical data, report time, and order parts, while ensuring timely procurement of materials needed for the maintenance of plant instruments and controls
  • Operates hand and power tools competently and responsibly to perform maintenance and repair tasks safely and effectively.
  • Safely handles and disposes of hazardous materials and waste according to laws and regulations.
  • Provides training for other facility personnel in identified maintenance tasks.
