About The Position

The Building Automation Control Specialist supports the maintenance and operations of the building mechanical systems, control systems, chilled water or steam plants and associated metering to ensure building systems are operating within the desired optimal indoor environmental conditions for a variety of work areas including research laboratories. Leads special projects. JOB SCOPE: No supervisory responsibilities or duties. Oversees control projects. May direct contractors, other personnel, or work as a part of a team on specific projects or other work assignments. Orients new employees and may provide guidance to contract staff. May have to respond to outages quickly during periods of inclement weather. Works with other personnel and contractors to achieve optimal indoor environments for a variety of uses. Develops operational procedures and sequence of operations diagrams for systems. Recognizes and resolves issues to maintain environmental integrity and work productivity. Evaluates and recommends improvements to instrumentation. Analyze and improve custom programming to improve environmental conditions or energy efficiencies Installs, performs routine maintenance and inspections to ensure quality work and continues functioning of systems to ensure quality and control costs for large, complex and sophisticated heating, refrigeration, ventilation, air conditioning and water treatment systems and associated controls in an array of settings including large institutional research setting and with a wide variety of systems and equipment. Trouble shoots and repairs problems with HVAC control systems. May work with other trades to maintain, operate and repair controls equipment, including variable frequency drives, building automation systems, etc. Commission and re-commission building systems to ensure design operation. Build and install custom graphics for BAS controls. Install, configure, and program programmable controllers. Develops and maintains documentation and resources regarding controls systems and maintains an updated knowledge of all mechanical and electrical controls systems. May work with leadership, engineers and equipment manufacturers to trend data on systems and help develop programs and practices to improve energy efficiency.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent education required. Graduate of a trade or vocational school with courses in blueprint reading, mathematics and physics and specialized curriculum in HVAC&R maintenance preferred.
  • Five years of HVAC & R experience, with specific experience and strong knowledge of digital and pneumatic controls systems, hydronics, refrigeration, building control techniques, and programming. Journey level experience as an HVAC mechanic. Experience using a computer to manage building control systems and/or chilled water systems required.
  • CFC certification required.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's license with good driving record required.
  • Knowledge of state and local codes that pertain to the positions area of responsibility.
  • Ability to analyze problems, interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Must possess a good understanding of programming and automated building control.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with others.
  • May be asked to provide basic general purpose maintenance tools.
  • May be required to work additional hours and shifts.
  • Position is deemed emergency personnel during emergency weather conditions.
  • Must travel to different locations to work.
