Instrumentation & Controls Engineer 2 - Nuclear

Sargent & LundyWarrenville, IL
Hybrid

About The Position

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for three days in the office and two days remote. Sargent & Lundy's nuclear power generation clients are actively digitizing existing power plants and constructing new nuclear power plants, including small modular reactors (SMRs), to meet the increasing demand for electric power. This expansion has led to a growing need for Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineers within the company. The position provides an opportunity to apply and enhance an engineering academic background by contributing to the digitization of nuclear power plants. This involves working on multi-discipline engineering teams for I&C projects, which integrate electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering with control theory. The engineer will interact with various components such as electronic process sensors, digital controllers, network topology, touchscreen displays, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors. Key tasks include preparing specifications for I&C equipment procurement and performing engineering calculations. The role also includes mentoring, classroom-style technical sessions, and on-the-job training to foster skill development. Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant sites for project coordination and field verification is also required.

Requirements

  • A BS or MS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (from an ABET accredited program) with a strong academic background and coursework in analog and digital control systems is required
  • A minimum of 1 year of engineering experience or a MS degree.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in mechatronics is desired, but not required
  • Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
  • Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that helps you apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems.

Responsibilities

  • Work on a multi-discipline engineering team involved in nuclear power plant Instrumentation and Controls projects.
  • Work with electronic process sensors, digital controllers, network topology, touchscreen displays, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines and reactors.
