About The Position

The City of Ventura has an exciting opportunity to join Ventura Water as an Instrumentation and Electrical Technician to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and control systems used in water and wastewater facilities. This position offers the opportunity to work on advanced control systems, PLC- and SCADA-driven processes, industrial instrumentation, and electrical distribution equipment in an environment that requires precision, safety, and technical expertise. The Instrumentation and Electrical Technician will be part of a skilled team responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving systems that support continuous plant operations and long-term infrastructure performance. Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of a two-year college program in electrical/electronic technology, computer science or a related field, and two years of experience in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic control systems are required.
  • License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the installation, calibration, testing, and repair of industrial electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Have experience working with PLC-, HMI-, and telemetry-controlled processes in an industrial, utility, or treatment facility environment.
  • Be skilled in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, logic diagrams, loop sheets, and other technical documentation.
  • Understand and apply electrical codes, safety practices, and lockout/tagout procedures in all work assignments.
  • Use effective troubleshooting methods to identify faults and restore operations quickly with minimal downtime.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a field-based technical team.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, maintenance logs, and compliance-related records.
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to workplace safety, system reliability, and quality workmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Installing, maintaining, calibrating, and repairing a variety of instrumentation and control equipment, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, sensors, analyzers, recorders, VFDs, and PLC-based control systems.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and electronic failures in control panels, motor control centers, instrumentation loops, and related systems.
  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on SCADA-monitored systems to ensure operational reliability.
  • Assisting with programming, configuring, and updating PLC, HMI, and telemetry components under established standards and procedures.
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to support repairs and installations.
  • Installing and maintaining conduit, wiring, grounding, and power distribution components in accordance with electrical codes and safety standards.
  • Performing work on low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems using proper lockout/tagout and safety procedures.
  • Documenting maintenance activities, calibrations, system adjustments, and part replacements in computerized maintenance systems.
  • Coordinating with engineers, operators, and contractors on system upgrades, replacements, and capital projects.
  • Participating in standby, emergency response, and after-hours call-outs as assigned.
  • Performing related duties as required to support safe and continuous operation of City facilities.
