About The Position

The Instrument Technician at University Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting direct patient care by ensuring that the Operating Room staff has access to the correct, fully functional, and sterile surgical instruments. This position involves performing essential functions in the Sterile Processing department, including decontamination, preparation and packing, sterilization, and dispatching of surgical instruments, all while adhering to high standards of customer service and professionalism.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience is required.
  • One year of experience as an operating room sterile processing technician or equivalent experience is required.
  • Certification through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) CSPDT or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) CRCST is required.
  • New hires must obtain certification within one year from the date of hire; current employees must submit certification within one year from the date of notification.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in surgical instrumentation or central supply/materials management is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in direct patient care by ensuring timely delivery of sterile surgical instrumentation to the Operating Room staff.
  • Perform decontamination of surgical instruments to ensure they are free from contaminants.
  • Prepare and pack surgical instruments for sterilization, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Sterilize surgical instruments using appropriate methods and equipment to maintain safety standards.
  • Dispatch sterilized instruments to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
