About The Position

This position works under the supervision of the SSPD Manager and Supervisor. It involves decontaminating and evaluating the functional integrity of sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment for the Surgery Department and other specialty areas of the Hospital. The role requires specific skill competence in all levels of decontamination and sterilization of surgical trays, equipment, and technology, supporting the efficient turnover of cases in Surgery and SRMC by performing tasks that meet the indirect needs of the surgery patient.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certification through the National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management required.
  • Previous Operating Room experience desired.
  • Previous experience within a surgical or sterile processing environment preferred.
  • Previous working knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Works in the Decontamination Room per procedure.
  • Applies appropriate cleaning/disinfection techniques and sterilization procedures for all equipment, instrumentation, devices, and technology that are processed through the department.
  • Works with hazardous chemicals and contaminated waste.
  • Checks sterile package for integrity and for manufacturers' out dates.
  • Uses machinery such as Steris, Sterrad, Autoclaves, ETO Sterilizer, and Airclean Cidex system.
  • Verifies that instrument set inventory of items is complete and in working order prior to assembly and sterilization.
  • Removes broken instruments and replaces worn items per procedure.
  • Communicates need to replace instruments to Supervisor and/or OR Specialist.
  • Uses Surgeons Preference Cards to pull cases for Surgery.
  • Works with the Nurse Specialist to share/exchange information about product and product changes for current and upcoming procedures.
  • Receives loaner equipment and instrumentation from vendors per procedure and verifies that sets are complete.
  • Organizes return of decontaminated inventory to vendor.
  • Outdates SSPD supplies.
  • Properly conducts sterilizer checks and cleaning on a routine basis.
  • Verifies correct supplies, equipment, and instrumentation are readily available for each procedure including obtaining missing items and resolution of issues associated with the acquisition.
  • Communicates/coordinates activities with Surgery to ensure smooth efficient flow of surgical case carts for SSPD to OR suites.
  • Performs job-related duties as assigned, such as orientation of new personnel, keeping a clean work environment, and special projects as assigned.

Benefits

  • Hourly rate for this position is $34.34 - $41.75.
