About The Position

Under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Group Exercise Instructor (Land or Water) is responsible for conducting safe, effective, and enjoyable exercise classes by providing leadership, up-to-date quality instruction and high energy motivation. The Group Exercise Instructor will work with people of all ages, and lead group fitness classes to motivate members to improve their overall health and wellbeing. As an instructor, you are passionate about health and wellness and enjoy empowering people to achieve their goals. You are energetic, self-motivated and a natural teacher dedicated to helping others. Requirements

  • Must have basic knowledge of fitness or equivalent work/education experience; must have at minimum 25 hours of practical experience as a fitness class instructor.
  • High school Diploma
  • CPR and First Aid (must obtain within first 6 months of employment)
  • Group Fitness Instruction Certification with an accredited national certification (ACE, NETA, AFFA, NASM)
  • Ability to lead a fitness class; ability to motivate and educate members in the field of physical fitness
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations; ability to set up, move, and store equipment.
  • Ability to communicate to a diverse group of people.
  • Familiar with the culture and mission of the organization
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
  • Friendly and polite.
  • Ability to be gracious with all persons of various ages, cultures, and creeds.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and instructs fitness and/or related classes, following YMCA standards and guidelines.
  • Sets up and takes down class equipment. Reports equipment problems.
  • Attends staff meetings and approved trainings as required. Maintain current certifications.
  • Observes and discusses individual progress with participants. Develops rapport with members and responds to questions related to fitness.
  • Ensures safe and effective workouts. Responds to, and reports, accidents and incidents.
  • Discusses and promotes all YMCA programs. Motivates members to commit to long term participation.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  • Plans and implements a program in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA.
  • Coordinates activities which are culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate.
  • Any additional duties as assigned.
