About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. The North Carolina Justice Academy (with campuses in Edneyville and Salemburg) provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for law enforcement officers on topics including: anti-terrorism, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for Detention Officers and Telecommunicators on behalf of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission. This position is located in Salemburg, NC.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which assigned; or Bachelor’s degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which instruction is to be conducted; or an equivalent combination of education arid experience.

Responsibilities

  • Program instruction: plan and deliver courses in Speed Measuring Instrument (SMI) using approved curriculum, ensuring consistency with Academy standards and adult learning practices.
  • Curriculum maintenance: update lesson plans, scenarios, and materials to reflect current operational realities, policy considerations, and field feedback.
  • Participant support: facilitate discussions, guide practical exercises, and help law enforcement personnel apply resilience, stress management, and readiness concepts to real-world conditions.
  • Coordination and logistics: work with Academy staff to schedule courses, manage materials, and support classroom or field execution.
  • Quality assurance: ensure the course is delivered as designed, maintain fidelity to learning objectives, and document outcomes or improvement needs.
  • Continuous improvement: gather participant and stakeholder feedback and recommend refinements to strengthen relevance, engagement, and impact.
