About The Position

William Paterson University invites applications for the full-time, non-tenure-track position of Graphic Design and Interactive Media Instructor in the Department of Art, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, beginning August 15, 2025. The Department of Art seeks someone with a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for students from underrepresented communities. Reporting to the Department of Art Chairperson, this position includes teaching a variety of courses in graphic design, digital arts, and interactive media at undergraduate and graduate levels as well as appropriate activities to support student success. The Department of Art offers a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with a concentration in either Animation & Multimedia Design, Graphic & Interactive Media or Interdisciplinary Arts. The Department of Art also offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree, which is offered via multiple modalities and is a professional visual arts degree for fine artists, animators, designers, and media artists. The Department of Art at William Paterson University is a NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) accredited department. The position is renewable annually based on satisfactory job performance in the first five years, with opportunities for promotion, as well as subsequent renewals after five years.

Requirements

  • A Masters of Fine Arts in Digital Arts with a focus on Graphic Design and Interactive Media.
  • A mastery of the Adobe Suite and related software.
  • A record of, or potential for active professional practice.
  • Fluency in the practice and teaching of design and the ability to integrate contemporary creative concepts into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
  • Ability to work effectively using online platforms such as Zoom and Teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of teaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in graphic design, digital arts, and interactive media.
  • Perform other teaching and/or teaching/admin duties as assigned depending on departmental needs, such as participating in the Foundation Portfolio Review Process.
  • Teach courses in multiple modalities; ability to teach online or willingness to teach online.
  • Oversee the maintenance and organization of the graphic design studio spaces and classrooms.
  • Engage with faculty to ensure efficient organization of courses and coursework consistent with professional standards; develop courses and curriculum.
  • Serve as a student advisor.
  • Support students in their academic endeavors.
  • Serve on graduate student committees and other committees as appropriate.
  • Participate in a variety of opportunities within the department, college, and university community including, where required, mentoring students.
  • Engage in formal and informal processes of departmental assessment of student learning and programming.
  • Attend department and college meetings as required and engage in activities of the department.
  • Engage in professional development to stay current and academically prepared in the field.
  • Perform other teaching or administrative duties as appropriate depending on departmental needs.
