About The Position

The Surgical Technology (SUR) full-time (FT) instructor is responsible for planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating classroom instruction and related activities. Duties include, but are not limited to, teaching, providing instructional counseling and academic advising, serving on college committees, and participating in professional activities and organizations at all levels. The instructor may be assigned to teach or perform duties during the day, evening, or weekends on any Coastal Alabama Community College campus as needed. The SUR FT instructor must adhere to the general guidelines as specified by the College's Policy and Procedures Manual, the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health, and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees. Requirements

  • Demonstrate effectiveness in teaching and maintain current knowledge in their subject matter, as documented by appropriate professional credentials, certifications, education, and experience in the designated content area.
  • Be a graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency;
  • Possess and maintain a credential in the field of Surgical Technology through a national certification program accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) (e.g., Certified Surgical Technologist - CST credential).
  • Possess a minimum of an associate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Have a minimum total of three (3) years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in instructional methods, curriculum development, and the supervision and evaluation of students in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings.
  • Possess excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and clinical affiliates.
  • Meet all institutional employment requirements of Coastal Alabama Community College, including successful completion of background and credential verification checks.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use technology effectively.
  • Possess the abilities necessary to perform instructional and clinical duties in accordance with job responsibilities and the requirements of affiliated clinical sites, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Prior teaching experience in SUR education or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum and Instruction 1.1. Develops, organizes, and updates the Surgical Technology curriculum in coordination with other program faculty, the Division Chair/Program Director, Associate Dean, and/or Dean to ensure compliance with College and accreditation standards (e.g., ARC/STSA, CAAHEP). 1.2. Plans, prepares, and delivers classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction that meets program objectives and supports student success. 1.3. Ensures that assigned classes and labs are held as scheduled and that each lesson is purposeful, engaging, and aligned with learning outcomes. 1.4. Incorporates varied teaching strategies and instructional technologies to accommodate diverse learning styles and maximize student achievement.
  • Teaching Responsibilities 2.1. Effectively teaches lecture, lab, and/or clinical courses as assigned during the day, evening, or weekends. 2.2. Utilizes appropriate assessment tools and evaluation methods to measure student learning outcomes and technical competencies.
  • Compliance and Administrative Duties 3.1. Implements and upholds College policies, procedures, and objectives in accordance with institutional philosophy and program accreditation requirements. 3.2. Submits syllabi, attendance verification, grades, and other required documentation accurately and on time. 3.3. Posts and maintains office hours for student advisement and support. 3.4. Conducts class evaluations and participates in institutional assessments as required. 3.5. Administers final examinations as scheduled.
  • Student Engagement and Advisement 4.1. Provides timely and constructive feedback on student performance through prompt grading of assignments, projects, and skills assessments.
  • 4.2. Responds to student communications in a timely manner. 4.3. Advises students on academic and professional matters, including progression through the program and preparation for national certification exams. 4.4. Completes student referrals (e.g., Retention Alerts, Crisis Intervention Alerts) to Student Support Services as needed.
  • Program and College Support 5.1. Participates in student recruitment and orientation activities. 5.2. Recommends learning resources, instructional materials, and laboratory/clinical equipment to support course objectives and program needs. 5.3. Assists in the development of the annual program budget and monitors resources responsibly. 5.4. Participates in departmental and college committees as assigned.
  • Professional Development and Continuous Improvement 6.1. Maintains current professional credentials and stays informed of industry standards, surgical technology innovations, and instructional best practices. 6.2. Engages in ongoing professional development and contributes to continuous program improvement in collaboration with colleagues and administration. 6.3. Provides input on curriculum enhancements and program evaluation in accordance with College and accreditation procedures. 6.4. Completes Distance Education Certification (DEC) before or by the end of the first semester of employment if assigned to teach online or hybrid courses.

  • Serves on and provides information to college committees as needed.
  • Complies with ACCS and College policies, as well as state and federal laws.
  • Ensures the positive promotion of the College and integration of all campuses within the College.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
