The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth-largest transportation system in the U.S., connecting communities across a 2,200-square-mile service region. We are seeking to hire candidates for our Instructor Regional Rail (9162) - Railroad Simulation. The Instructor will assist management and oversight of the RRD Simulator Training Room, create scenarios for teaching and evaluating students' knowledge, and train RRD instructors on the functional usage of the simulators. Responsibilities include setting up and running equipment, administering tests, and ensuring simulator equipment is maintained.

  • Assists in all activity in the simulator room
  • Creates simulated learning and performance exercises
  • Trains RRD instructional staff on simulator operation
  • Monitors operating/maintenance employee records relative to simulator training
  • Assists in maintenance and updates of simulator software and hardware
  • Reviews student engineer/conductor simulator performance and provides feedback
  • Ensures changes to SEPTA operating environment are reflected in the simulator environment
  • Provides statistical information to the Chief Instructor of Simulator Training
  • Administers employee certification and promotion programs
  • Teaches classes as needed within the Training Department
  • Assists in accident investigation and analysis of accident, employee discipline, and operational development statistics
  • Provides remedial training when required
  • Ensures that all policies and procedures of the Authority and the operating/mechanical departments are enforced
  • Assists Operations Transportation and Maintenance division supervision during service interruptions and other unusual occurrences
  • Must be a designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers
  • Backfills for Chief Instructor, RRD Simulation as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • High School Diploma plus five (5) total years related operations (railroad) and instructor experience which includes a minimum of two (2) years current experience as a Railroad Instructor
  • An equivalent combination of advanced education and experience may be considered
  • Two (2) years of current experience as a Railroad Instructor required, regardless of the equivalency
  • Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers (or Road Foreman of Engines) required
  • Must be fully qualified on PC's
  • Must be qualified to operate all railroad passenger and diesel equipment
  • Must be T&E NORAC qualified
  • Strong planning, scheduling and administrative skills required
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Excellent PC skills required
