About The Position

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Instructor/Assistant Professor of Social Sciences is responsible for developing and teaching Social Science courses, including Anthropology, Native Studies, History, Sociology, or Political Science within the Academic Division.

Requirements

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated experience with distance delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience working in rural or isolated environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Ability to travel periodically.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
  • Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College.
  • Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community.
  • Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Social Sciences, Anthropology, History, Sociology, or Native Studies.
  • Demonstrated professional teaching experience in the appropriate field.

  • Doctorate degree or equivalent in Social Sciences, Anthropology, History, Sociology, or Native Studies.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and maintains updated instructional materials, course outlines, and curriculum.
  • Maintains office hours, as required.
  • Serves as academic advisor to degree-seeking students.
  • Evaluates student performance and submits appropriate grades and reports.
  • Assists in the recruitment, monitoring, and retention of students.
  • Participates in professional development, as appropriate.
  • Completes reports and presentations, and attends meetings and special events, as required.
  • Utilizes a combination of direct instruction, cooperative learning, hybrid, distance delivery, and/or computer-based interactive instruction (both synchronous and asynchronous).
  • Individualizes approach to instruction to accommodate students’ learning styles and abilities.
  • Reviews and develops curriculum within Social Sciences and ensures that curriculum remains up-to-date and place-based.
  • Assists with completing degree and program assessments and data collection necessary to remain compliant with accreditation standards.
  • Actively participates on Iḷisaġvik College committees and task forces, activities, curriculum planning, professional development, and assisting in the budgeting of assigned programs, and others.
  • Participates in Faculty Association, in faculty recruitment, and orientation activities as needed.
  • Maintains office hours, as required.
  • Contributes toward the attainment of the goals and mission of the College.
  • Complies with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
