About The Position

Under direction, performs specialized technical instructional support duties in an assigned science (e.g., physics, biology, chemistry, etc.) laboratory, classroom, or similar instructional setting by assisting students in developing competencies and completing assigned academic work using an established framework of procedures and protocols; oversees and coordinates the use of laboratory equipment and facilities; sets up and/or conducts specialized lesson-based activities based on in-depth knowledge of science applicable to the area of assignment; assists students and/or instructors in using various specialized assigned science instructional technologies and equipment; uses various instructional support methods/tools to reinforce instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, techniques and/or procedures; tracks student participation and attendance, assesses competencies, and proctors laboratory examinations; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in science courses relevant to the area of assignment (e.g., physics, biology, chemistry, etc.).
  • Three (3) years of science laboratory experience relevant to the area of assignment (e.g., physics, biology, chemistry, etc.), including instructional assistance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specialized technical instructional support duties in the assigned science laboratory, classroom, or similar instructional setting by assisting students in developing competencies and completing assigned laboratory work using an established framework of procedures and protocols.
  • Oversees and coordinates the use of laboratory equipment and facilities; maintains facilities and equipment and stores equipment and materials.
  • Sets up and/or conducts specialized exercises, simulations, demonstrations, classroom assignments, and other lesson-based activities based on in-depth knowledge of science in applicable area of assignment; prepares equipment, materials, and supplies; demonstrates the proper and safe use of equipment and materials; properly cleans and stores equipment and supplies after use.
  • Assists instructors and students in using various specialized equipment and facilities; may schedule laboratory and/or equipment usage for instructors and/or individual students; may check equipment in and out.
  • Assists students and/or instructors in using technology, including learning management system, student account, and internal communication platforms; sets up and configures software applications to meet specific student or class needs; provides assistance on standard business applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, and internet tools.
  • Uses various instructional support methods/tools to reinforce and assist students with the application of instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, techniques and/or procedures presented by the instructor including specialized computer hardware, peripherals, and applications; explains assignments to one or more students and guides them in the use of equipment and materials to perform class activities.
  • Tracks student participation and attendance, assesses competencies, and proctors laboratory examinations to monitor student progress based on specific rubrics and criteria; informs instructors of related issues or problems.
  • Monitors inventories and confers with staff on the equipment and supplies required for proposed curricula; researches pricing and availability of needed technologies and laboratory equipment; submits requests to management for the purchase of needed items.
  • Maintains electronic and hard copy records and files pertaining to student participation, performance, and progress in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
  • May perform routine computer hardware and software maintenance, installations, and/or updates; may calibrate and maintain specialized equipment related to assigned areas; troubleshoots and resolves minor equipment problems and notifies appropriate staff of needed repairs or replacement.
  • May assist management with monitoring budgets, compiling, and reporting data; may recommend changes to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • May coordinate subject related activities and workshops.
  • May provide work direction to, lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Salary range: Step 1 $5,289.35 to Step 6 $6,750.70 per month (plus longevity where applicable).
  • Internal applicants may be initially placed at a higher starting salary as outlined in the CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
