About The Position

Provide high-level instructional and operational support for large-enrollment General Chemistry laboratory courses (CH104M and CH104N). This role is critical to the daily function of the courses and requires a candidate who can independently manage responsibilities, being proactive at tasks, and maintain consistent performance in a fast-paced academic environment. The ideal candidate is proactive, highly organized, detail-oriented, and demonstrates strong professional judgment and accountability. Candidate selected for this role must demonstrate: Reliability and accountability in completing assigned responsibilities without repeated follow-up. Proactive communication, including early identification of issues and timely updates. Strong time management and prioritization skills, especially during high-demand periods. Professional judgment when interacting with students, TAs, and instructional staff. Ability to receive feedback and implement improvements consistently. To ensure the reliable and efficient delivery of General Chemistry laboratory instruction by: Maintaining seamless coordination of lab operations and digital course systems. Supporting instructional TAs/UGCAs in delivering consistent, high-quality student experiences. Providing structured oversight and support for teaching assistants. Ensuring timely completion of course logistics, communication, and grading coordination.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment (academic or research).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision and meet strict deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (e.g., data organization, basic formulas, tracking systems)
  • Experience using learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) in an instructional setting.
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Clear and professional communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supporting or coordinating undergraduate laboratory courses.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or leading teaching assistants.
  • Experience managing logistics for large courses or multi-section environments.
  • Familiarity with grading workflows, scheduling, and student accommodations.
  • Experience creating instructional content (e.g., videos, lab guides, or digital resources).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (e.g., data organization, basic formulas, tracking systems).

Responsibilities

  • Independently manage Canvas course setup, updates, and troubleshooting, ensuring accuracy of assignments, gradebook settings, and student access.
  • Support and troubleshoot lab operations, including real-time problem-solving during lab sessions.
  • Monitor TA performance through regular check-ins; identify issues early and coordinate appropriate follow-up or coverage.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate tracking systems for attendance, make-ups, and scheduling with minimal supervision.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of instructional materials (procedures, slides, videos) with attention to clarity and accuracy.
  • Facilitate TA trainings and provide leadership support.
  • Conduct routine gradebook audits to ensure completeness and accuracy across sections.
  • Manage multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously while maintaining strong communication with instructional staff.
