About the position

The Instructional Specialist will provide course design and planning support to faculty in order to create effective and engaging learning environments that are aligned with clear objectives and result in desired learning outcomes. This position will consult with faculty and subject matter experts from diverse disciplines to identify evidence-based instructional strategies that align with course goals. The Instructional Specialist will provide pedagogical training to faculty through workshops, webinars, video tutorials, consultation, and other instructional methods. Support provided to faculty should be grounded in Universal Design for Learning and up-to-date knowledge of best practices and emerging needs/resources for the college learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty in the direct development of course materials for delivery of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Provide guidance and collaborate in the creation of high-quality videos, graphics, animations, and other interactive material using a variety of tools.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise in best practices and emerging resources/trends for high quality postsecondary course.
  • Collaborate with other campus partners for well-rounded faculty support.
  • Facilitate twice-annual Introduction to College Teaching mini-course.
  • Lead, develop, facilitate, and assist with professional development workshops and symposiums.
  • Plan and facilitate annual Teaching Series to include in-person and virtual workshops.
  • Coordinate planning for and facilitate annual summer course redesign institute.
  • Lead teaching-related Faculty Learning Communities as applicable.
  • Maintain updated asynchronous resource materials related to teaching on the Office for Faculty Excellence website.
  • Provide consultation and direct support related to course planning and delivery.
  • Actively contribute to Office for Faculty Excellence efforts that involve all team members.

Requirements

  • Master's degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience designing and facilitating high quality learning environments in higher education; or a bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design models and frameworks (e.g. backward design, Universal Design for Learning, Quality Matters).
  • Proficiency using the Canvas Learning Management System or similar LMS.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency with a variety of applicable instructional technologies and interactive tools (e.g., Adobe Products, H5P).
  • Experience with Audio and Video Editing Tools.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new tools.
