About The Position

The School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SASA) within the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) is seeking an Instructional Specialist to perform moderately complex technical support and operational assistance within a dynamic university lab environment. Under the direction of the lab manager and senior instructional specialists, this role plays a key part in supporting lab-based instruction by ensuring equipment, materials, and learning spaces are prepared, maintained, and functioning effectively. Working with a degree of independence, the successful candidate will contribute to general lab maintenance, coordinate operational needs, and uphold established lab safety standards to create a safe and productive teaching environment. Requirements

  • High School Diploma and three years (3) experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree and one (1) year of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; Or, any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Experience working in a professional science lab in higher education (2 years)
  • Experience in preparation of media and reagents used for biology and chemistry
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of laboratory operations, specifically biology and chemistry
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the proper and safe handling, use, and disposal of laboratory waste, instruments, specimens, and equipment
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Evidence of successful leadership of undergraduate student employees
  • Demonstrated commitment to values expressed by the ASU Charter

Responsibilities

  • Ensure experiments and demonstrations are set up and functioning properly in science teaching laboratories including biology, chemistry, and physics
  • Supervise the setup of laboratory experiments including assembling equipment, preparing reagents and solutions; supervise the disassembling of laboratory experiments and waste disposal
  • Mentor student employees in preparing chemicals, biologicals, and equipment
  • Train new student employees in lab policies and procedures such as reagent preparation, safety, and waste disposal
  • Troubleshoot issues with current experimental set ups and offer suggestions for improving curriculum
  • Edit laboratory set up and clean up instructions provided to the student employees
  • Assist with inventories and maintenance projects for laboratory equipment and materials
  • Identify classroom, IT, and facilities problems and communicate possible solutions to the laboratory manager
  • Supervise and participate in inventory projects and request items to be ordered by the laboratory manager
  • Communicate with instructors to ensure the needs of the laboratory courses are met
  • Participate in curriculum improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the lab manager to ensure smooth lab operations
