About the position

The Instructional Designer is an Epic certified instructor responsible for providing successful training to a diversified audience for the HFHS implementation of an electronic healthcare record utilizing the EPIC system of applications. It will require flexible work hours to meet the needs of the user community. Under general supervision, organizes and conducts moderately complex training and educational programs for Epic application. Maintains records of training activities, employee progress, and program effectiveness. This job is responsible for improving the image and productivity of the application end user experience. Certified candidate will be providing computer, workflow based and procedural training, and completing operations improvement projects. The Instructional Designer will provide management oversight for the credentialed trainers within their application area. This will include assisting with the recruitment and hiring of these individuals, coordinating schedules and tasks and providing quality assessments of their instructional skills and classroom performance. Requires a strong skill set in interpersonal, written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, organize and facilitate computer and procedural training programs and continuing education for all HFHS employees and community physicians.
  • Design assessments to measure employee knowledge and skills; maintain documentation of assessment results and report results to training managers.
  • Identify problems and report trends to Implementation and Training Manager; recommend training and education programs, process improvement programs and/or other program developments.
  • Design and implement new processes/programs to improve the image and productivity of the training department.
  • Monitor industry changes and system updates; revise training programs to incorporate industry changes.
  • Collaborate with appropriate internal and external staff members to conceptualize new procedures or programs.
  • Assess training needs before, during and after each class.
  • Make necessary adjustments to training delivery based on student and training team feedback.
  • Develop strategies and solutions for enhancements to lesson plans and training delivery approaches.
  • Provide management oversight for the credentialed trainers including coordinating schedules and tasks, credentialing trainers, and reviewing evaluations.
  • Provide support to all staff and Providers according to assigned coverage schedule during go-live.
  • Conduct rounding to HFHS sites during the initial weeks of go-live to support end users according to the assigned coverage schedule.
  • Identify, communicate and escalate training and support issues to ensure timely resolution.
  • Participate in regular day-to-day communication with HFHS project teams to ensure the training will fit the organization's needs.
  • Provide on-going unit/department rounding as assigned to provide training and support.
  • Identify issues and concerns and communicate those back to project team for discussion and resolution.
  • Identify trends that may require additional training focus, in-service needs, Policy and Procedure modifications, system modification, etc.
  • Promote effective use of the Epic system, identify and prevent bad habits and workarounds.
  • Serve as a change agent to promote, affect and support change in workflow and behaviors related to the Epic system implementation.
  • Conduct new hire computer system training during the transition period as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school required.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, preferably in education, instructional design, clinical field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to two (1-2) years of experience with specialized information systems in a clinical healthcare environment and/or one to two (1-2) years of clinical/healthcare training experience.
  • Medical Assisting, Nursing, Health Care Administration, Project Management or Information Technology preferred.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of computer related experience required preferably in a medical clinic setting or training in a hospital setting.
  • Instructional Design experience preferred.
  • Experience EMR training and/or implementation a plus preferred.
  • Knowledge of HFHS clinical and operational workflows, as well as policy and procedures is beneficial.
  • Ability to consistently present scripted training materials to large groups, and to conduct engaging and effective training sessions to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to design educational curriculum incorporating operational workflows and policies.
  • Outstanding customer service, people and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high-level of energy, adaptability and flexibility necessary for this project.
  • Prior knowledge and expertise in either the training and/or implementation of health care information technology solutions.
  • Comfortable in the use of Microsoft Office Suite technology.

Nice-to-haves

  • Epic certification candidate preferred.
  • Epic certification will be required once hired and needs to be complete within first 90 days or based on first available Epic training.
