About The Position

The Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University seeks an Instructional Design Coach to advance teaching excellence and educational innovation within undergraduate medical education. This position partners with faculty to enhance course design, implement evidence-based teaching strategies, and create engaging learning experiences that support student success and align with institutional goals. The Instructional Design Coach serves as a trusted educational consultant, providing individualized coaching, facilitating faculty development, and promoting best practices in instructional design and curriculum development. The coach will collaborate with faculty to analyze learning needs, design effective instructional materials, integrate educational technology, and foster innovative pedagogical approaches. This individual cultivates a culture of teaching excellence by mentoring faculty in learner-centered instruction and supporting continuous improvement of the medical education experience. Faculty rank will be determined based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field
  • 3–5 years of experience in instructional design, educational development, or faculty development
  • Demonstrated experience coaching or consulting with faculty on course design and teaching practices
  • Strong understanding of learning theories, instructional design frameworks, and evidence-based teaching strategies
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, models, and best practices (e.g., backward design, cognitive load theory)
  • Knowledge of evidence-based teaching strategies and active learning methodologies
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and faculty development principles
  • Knowledge of educational technologies and learning management systems
  • Knowledge of assessment design and alignment with learning outcomes
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and establish trust with diverse faculty
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and coaching in a supportive manner
  • Ability to communicate complex instructional design concepts clearly and effectively
  • Ability to manage multiple coaching relationships and projects simultaneously
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and lead faculty development sessions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in medical education or health professions education
  • Higher education teaching experience
  • Certification in instructional design or educational technology
  • Experience with curriculum mapping and program-level design
  • Familiarity with LCME standards and medical education accreditation requirements

Responsibilities

  • Instructional Coaching and Faculty Development
  • Assisting faculty with the development of readiness activities (pre-work) and in-class active learning facilitation
  • Guiding faculty in selecting and implementing appropriate pedagogical approaches and active learning strategies
  • Supporting faculty in integrating educational technology and digital tools to enhance student engagement and learning
  • Conducting instructional design consultations and needs assessments with individual faculty and departments
  • Developing and curating instructional design resources, templates, and guides for faculty use
  • Curriculum and Program Development
  • Partnering with the assessment specialist and curriculum committee to ensure alignment between curriculum design and assessment
  • Contributing to the preparation of materials for LCME accreditation and program reviews
  • Collaborating with the Associate Dean for Institutional Effectiveness and other academic leaders on curricular initiatives
  • Participating in committees related to curriculum development, faculty development, and educational innovation
  • Documenting coaching activities and tracking faculty development initiatives to support continuous improvement
  • Scholarship and Service
  • Staying current with trends and innovations in instructional design, medical education, and educational technology
  • Engaging in scholarly activity related to instructional design, student learning, and curriculum
  • Facilitating faculty development workshops on topics such as course design, active learning, assessment, and educational technology
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
