About The Position

Are you a doctoral student with college teaching experience and an interest in helping others improve their teaching? Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive environment? The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence (SITE) is seeking an instructional consultation graduate assistant (from any disciplinary background) for Fall 2025-Spring 2026. This is a Grade 14 half-time assistantship (20 hours per week). The Schreyer Institute provides teaching/learning resources to TAs and faculty across all Penn State locations. We work collaboratively with individual instructors, groups of instructors, departments, colleges, and campuses to develop teaching strategies that enhance student learning. We assist in developing assessment plans to determine the effectiveness of classroom innovations.

Requirements

  • Status as a doctoral student who has passed all aspects of the comprehensive exams by the time you apply.
  • Completion of all doctoral coursework by the end of Spring 2025 semester.
  • One or more semesters of instructional experience (in any discipline) in which you were responsible for creating class sessions (e.g., as autonomous instructor or as TA for a recitation or lab section); designing learning activities; and providing substantive feedback on student work.
  • Interest in helping faculty and graduate students learn more about teaching.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of learning theory, design, assessment, and/or educational evaluation
  • Teaching experience with a variety of course formats (lecture, lab, seminar, recitation, online, etc.)
  • Instructional leadership experience (e.g., head/lead TA, serving as a teaching mentor to other graduate students, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate teaching workshops and short courses
  • Develop new programs and workshops for a diverse clientele, particularly graduate student instructors and teaching assistants, including international teaching assistants
  • Consult with faculty and TAs on course planning, delivery, and evaluation
  • Keep up to date on teaching/learning research.
