About The Position

The Instructional Coach plays a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning within a school to increase student achievement. The Instructional Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to teachers. An Instructional Coach builds teachers’ skills and understanding of effective instructional practices to increase student learning. An Instructional Coach ensures the effective delivery of the district’s guaranteed core curriculum. The Instructional Coach promotes reflection for growth, provides guidance and structure where needed, and focuses on identified issues of school or district concern. Instructional Coaches work collaboratively as a team with members of the Curriculum & Instruction Department as well as within school and district teams. This is not a supervisory position and does not include formal evaluation of colleagues, but will require giving peers formal and informal feedback for improvement.

Requirements

  • Current North Carolina Teaching License
  • Minimum 5 years experience teaching
  • A record of successfully impacting student achievement
  • Strong pedagogical knowledge and content expertise
  • Demonstrated teacher leadership or coaching experience

  • Advanced degree
  • Eight or more years of teaching experience
  • Deep knowledge of reading, writing, literacy development, and/or math

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an advocate for students, teachers, and the school district.
  • Implement consistent, full coaching cycles (minimum 3 per quarter) with selected teachers to set goals, observe lessons, and provide ongoing feedback for continuous improvement to ensure student improvement.
  • Develop mini-coaching plans for selected teachers based on targeted needs.
  • Model and/or co-teach lessons in classrooms on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Observe lessons and provide feedback related to curricular programs and effective instruction for teachers on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Ability to mediate conflict and lead critical conversations with peers.
  • Keep coaching documentation and share a weekly coaching log with supervisors.
  • Organizes and prioritizes time to effectively lead and support teachers.
  • Creates solutions to resolve issues in collaboration with school and district leadership.
  • Assist with the development of district curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments in alignment with North Carolina DPI content standards.
  • Support the development of all teachers in understanding the state/district curriculum and assessments.
  • Provide direction and coordination for how the curriculum is taught consistent with district initiatives and recognized best instructional practices.
  • Co-plan with teachers to develop specific classroom activities/materials/assessments aligned to the curriculum and standards.
  • Support teachers in the use of digital and curricular resources.
  • Provide teachers with resources, materials, tools, information, etc. to support classroom instruction and planning.
  • Assist teachers with planning and pacing of lessons, the development of differentiated lessons, and the selection of instructional best practices to meet the needs of their students.
  • Model effective differentiated instruction.
  • Provide strategies for classroom management and motivation.
  • Participate in PLCs to encourage collaboration, alignment, and continuous improvement.
  • Guide PLC discussions focused specifically on curriculum/pacing guides, data analysis, and effective instructional strategies.
  • Support teachers and administrators in analyzing a variety of student assessment data.
  • Recommend modifications to instruction based on informal and formal instructional data.
  • Build teachers’ and administrators’ knowledge of using data to make instructional decisions.
  • Help teachers develop effective formative assessment strategies within each daily lesson.
  • Provide support and structures for MTSS Academic data-based decision-making and monitoring.
  • Create, implement, and monitor professional learning aligned to school and district priorities.
  • Develop and deliver professional development sessions to teachers, focusing on research-based instructional strategies, curriculum alignment, and best practices.
  • Support beginning teachers with mini coaching cycles and targeted professional development.
  • Stay informed about current educational trends, methodologies, and technology.
